Problem solving is probably the best skill I use, unexpected things always happen when we are designing new types of foods to manufacture and normally we don’t have much time to think of solutions.

You need to be creative with how you use your technical knowledge to fix problems and make sure they won’t come back in the future.

For example once we were making a new type of ketchup but our pump wasn’t strong enough to get the syrup in the tanks… we had no money for new pumps and not much time! I decided to use a different syrup that contianed more water and less sugar (it is less thick so it was easier to pump) and then we just took that water out of the final recipe…

As Mark said, it is mostly problem solving and creative thinking, you have to take the Maths, science and engineering knowledge you have and use it to solve a problem in the best way you can with the resources available.
